Top 10 Accessible Places in the North and Scotland: The Christmas Edition

Hurrah for Christmas! It’s coming ever closer and while some will grumble it’s too soon to break out the tinsel, it’s never too soon to prepare when your days out require a little more planning to cater for everyone!

In this edition, we are heading to the north of England and Scotland, to see what festive indulgences are on offer this year. There are some doozies!

 

The Snowman at The Sage, Gateshead

22nd to 24th December 2018, various times

 

Kicking off the Christmas period with a classic, you can sit and watch the Snowman, accompanied by an orchestra, in the beautiful Sage Gateshead which is located right on the riverside of the Tyne.

Accessibility

  • Blue Badge bays account for 15% of car parking in the main car park and parking is free for Blue Badge holders
  • One complimentary ticket available for an accompanying carer
  • Assistance Dogs are welcome at the venue but valid ID from Assistance Dog (UK) must be provided
  • Various access to the building with level surfaces
  • Four lifts to provide assistance to higher levels

Hadrian’s Tipi, Sunderland and Newcastle  

From October 2018

Christmas is all about good food, drink and company in the coziest of places and Hadrian’s Tipi is the perfect place to sit and enjoy those vibes! Located in both Sunderland and Newcastle, it promises log fires, a well-stocked bar and you can even bring the dog! Magic.

The Christmas Market, Edinburgh

Getting wrapped up and heading to the Christmas market is definitely on the festive to-do list and Edinburgh Christmas Market is a strong contender for a visit! Plenty of Christmas crafts, gifts, food and drink to be snapped up in time for 25th December!

Christmas at the Botanics, Edinburgh

Selected evenings from 23rd November to 29th December 2018

The Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh is a sight to behold anytime but they definitely step their game up at Christmas. Fantastic displays of incandescent flowers, marching reindeer, gingerbread men as well as the scented Fire Garden and, not forgetting, Santa and his elves make for an enchanted experience!

  • The route is on hard standing and alternative routes will be made for those with mobility needs
  • Accessible toilets onsite
  • Four parking spaces outside of the West Gate entrance
  • Guidelines on photosensitive epilepsy have been considered when creating strobe lighting displays

Various Christmas Activities and Events at Alnwick Garden, Northumberland

From 17th November 2018

The Alnwick Garden is pulling out all the stops and putting on events such as The Grand Lantern Parade, The Christmas Market, The Christmas Light Show, Christmas lunch and afternoon plus much more! That’s enough festive entertainment to keep you going till New Year.

Explore Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens as they are transformed this holiday season! With elements from Alice Through the Looking Glass including the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Hatters Tea Party, you can meander through and treat yourself to a glass of mulled wine and toast a marshmallow over the fire. Sounds pretty perfect to us!

Hosted in the People’s History Museum, this is a fantastic chance to support local small businesses and buy some gorgeous handmade gifts for friends and family! Pair that with some delicious food and drink, and it’s a fab outing!
